Guest loyalty research tools: matching Delighted, Medallia, Qualtrics, Toast and Maritz
Guest loyalty research tools: what Delighted, Medallia, Qualtrics, Toast and Maritz each do, how to match one to your question, judge accuracy and run a paid trial.
What to take away
- Delighted and Medallia price per response or per seat; Qualtrics prices by contract, so ask for a written quote.
- Accuracy comes from who was invited and who answered, not from the dashboard.
- Maritz runs loyalty research on your own transaction file; Toast only surveys guests who ordered through Toast.
- Test one calculation outside the tool before you sign.
- Keep the raw export, the question wording and the field dates beside the decision.
The tools, and what each one is
Delighted (owned by Qualtrics) sends NPS, CSAT and CES surveys by email, SMS or link and reports scores as they arrive. It suits a single-site restaurant or a small hotel group that wants fast feedback without an analyst. Pricing is a published per-response subscription.
Medallia runs experience programs for hotel groups and large restaurant chains, joining survey responses to stay, visit and spend records. It suits operators with a CRM team. Pricing is quoted per contract.
Qualtrics is a general research platform: survey builder, panel, conjoint and concept testing, with loyalty work built on top. It suits brands running their own studies. Pricing is quoted per contract.
Toast surveys guests through its restaurant point-of-sale and marketing module, so the sample is people who ordered through Toast. It suits independent restaurants already on Toast. Pricing is per location per month.
Maritz is a research firm rather than software. It designs loyalty studies, recruits participants and reports on your transaction data. It suits brands that want the study run for them. Pricing is project-based.
Match the tool to the question
Method
- Why did a guest return?
- Interview or survey
- Where does enrollment fail?
- Journey test, event analysis
- Was a benefit delivered?
- Reconciliation
- Did the program change behavior?
- Experiment
- What is lifetime behavior?
- Transaction analysis
Tool that fits

Limit
- Why did a guest return?
- Recall bias
- Where does enrollment fail?
- Consent coverage
- Was a benefit delivered?
- Manual exceptions
- Did the program change behavior?
- Selection
- What is lifetime behavior?

No tool answers every question. Start with the decision, the population and the evidence standard, then pick the software.

Judge accuracy before you judge the dashboard
AAPOR's standards and best-practices guide covers sampling, questionnaire design, pretesting, privacy and transparent reporting. Use it to test the method around a platform, not its templates.
Ask who had a chance to respond, who did, when the invitation appeared, which language and device were available, and how partial responses were handled. Keep the question wording and order with the result.
Run a paid trial before you commit
- Use one anonymized question and a representative data set.
- Configure consent, identity, roles, retention and deletion.
- Reproduce one calculation outside the dashboard.
- Export raw data, definitions and audit records.
- Test accessibility, error recovery and support.
- Price licenses, integration, training, security and exit.
A polished score with an unclear sample or a blocked export is hard to defend. The research owner should be able to say why the method fits the decision and what evidence would change it.
Test the operating burden
The GOV.UK technology selection guidance recommends adaptable choices, data control, security review and ownership-cost analysis. Apply those questions to guest loyalty marketing tools; the guidance is not an endorsement of any product.
The GOV.UK open standards guidance ties open standards to interoperability and reduced supplier dependence. Test whether loyalty program data and definitions can move between systems.
Give each tool the same sample, roles, output, failure case and export task. Measure setup time, recurring labor, correction work and shutdown effort. A feature counts only when an intended user completes the task safely. Save the tested plan and its date, because a product page today does not promise the same function or price in 2027.
Common questions
Which guest loyalty research tool is best?
None is best in the abstract. Delighted suits fast, low-cost feedback, Medallia and Maritz suit brands with transaction data, Qualtrics suits teams running their own studies, and Toast suits restaurants already on Toast.
Are surveys enough?
Surveys explain reported experience and attitudes. Pair them with observed delivery and completed behavior when the decision turns on what guests actually did, not what they said.
Should a vendor score be accepted as-is?
No. Ask for the definition, the population, the weighting, the missing-data treatment and the known limits before you use the number in a board deck.
